Expand your math skills with Minecraft!
Rather than letting video games drive you crazy, join in on the fun with one of the most popular video games – Minecraft. Mine It: Minecraft Mathematics Make Math Meaningful is an innovative after school program offered to 6th – 8th grade students by PAST Innovation Lab through instructor Heather Kellert.
This mathematics-based program uses Minecraft to hone students’ proportional reasoning methods, utilize geometric coordinate systems, and practice life skills like collaboration, communication, and organization. And it’s fun!
Minecraft is a video game about breaking and placing blocks to build structures. However, students not only practice math skills but also gain engineering and programming experiences as well. Minecraft was created by Mojang, an indie game developer studio based in Stockholm, Sweden. Mojang was recently purchased by Microsoft for $2.5 billion. Now that’s a real endorsement!
The cost of this program is $55 per student. This includes all hands on supplies and materials. Students will be responsible for bringing their own laptop computer to the program in order to access the Minecraft software.
This program will be offered Thursdays at PAST Innovation Lab from January 28th to March 3rd, 2016 and is limited to the first 20 students that sign up.
