Regional Organizations

The following regional organizations and stakeholders are working to build upon and scale up STEM-education initiatives in the Southeast Ohio Region:

Appalachian Regional Commission
The Appalachian Regional Commissions provides two programs, the Area Development Program and Highway Program, and funding to several projects to create new jobs, improve school readiness and support new businesses in Appalachia. They have four strategic goals, one of which is to strengthen the capacity of people in Appalachia to compete in the global economy. For more information, visit, www.arc.gov.

Coalition of Rural and Appalachian Schools
The Coalition of Rural and Appalachian Schools (CORAS), in partnership with Ohio University College of Education, reaches a 29-county region on Ohio’s Appalachian area including 134 school districts, higher education and educational agencies. CORAS has brought partners together to discuss a STEM education approach for the region. For more information, visit www.coras.org.

Foundation for Appalachian Ohio
The Foundation for Appalachian Ohio (FAO) is a regional community foundation that “seeks to achieve a thriving economy, educational excellence and cultural enrichment while recognizing the region’s unique heritage and traditions.” For more information, visit www.appalachianohio.org.

Longaberger Foundation
The Longaberger Foundation’s mission is too “stimulate a better quality of life through philanthropy.” They seek to address the regional quality of life needs and invest in programs that make a difference in people’s lives. For more information, visit www.longaberger.com.

Ohio Appalachian Center for Higher Education
The Ohio Appalachian Center for Higher Education (OACHE) partners with higher-education institutions and K-12 schools in the 29 Appalachian counties. Established in 1993, OACHE is charged with increasing the college-going rate of Appalachian Ohioans. For more information, visit www.oache.org.

South East Ohio Center for Excellence in Mathematics and Science
The South East Ohio Center for Excellence in Mathematics and Science (SEOCEMS) is a collaboration of Ohio University, the University of Rio Grande, Rio Grande Community College, Shawnee State University and members of CORAS. SEOCEMS functions to improve K-16 mathematics and science teaching and learning. For more information, visit www.seocems.org.
