Trainer: Jim Mamer, Middle School Math Teacher and CMP Teacher Trainer – firstname.lastname@example.org
Who: Math teachers in grades 5-8 are welcome, as well as others interested in learning more about CMP. CMP3 has been written to accommodate Common Core and is available to the public this summer. Teachers new to CMP, teachers who have used CMP2, and teachers who are adopting CMP3 will benefit from this professional development.
Goals: The goal(s) of this workshop are (1) to introduce CMP3 content and teaching strategies to those who are curious or adopting it, and to (2) provide a “vertical” approach to learning CMP3 units so that teachers in grades 6-8 can learn about the units in their grade levels as well as those above or below where they teach. The main content we will focus on this summer is measurement and geometry. Participants will study three CMP3 units in depth: Covering and Surrounding (6th grade), Filling and Wrapping (7th grade), and Butterflies, Pinwheels, and Hubcaps (8th grade). Participants will experience many lessons just as students do, including working in cooperative groups to solve many of the problems posed in the curriculum. Participants will be engaged in, and debrief about, best teaching practices for implementing these units and teaching mathematics in general.
Unwritten Goal: Create an inspiring environment for middle school math classroom teachers to learn, grow, and share ideas on best teaching practices!
