Higher Education

Your institutions are dependent upon the quality of the state’s high school graduates. As a result, higher education leaders around Ohio have worked to make teacher preparation a top-priority on campus, in order to improve the P-12 student experience. While these efforts are moving the needle, higher education partners can play an even greater role. That’s why Ohio’s approach to STEM education, through the Ohio STEM Learning Network (OSLN), calls for higher education institutions to be primary partners, along with businesses and P-12 educators, in the development of a STEM school.

STEM schools are aimed at preparing students who are ready for college, career and life—students who will transition smoothly into higher education without the need for remediation. To meet this goal, higher education must be the centerpiece of a transformative STEM school. Students attending STEM schools, for example, have the opportunity to earn college credit and enroll in courses on campus. And in best-in-class models, professors interact directly with both STEM school students and teachers to provide opportunities including hands-on learning labs and curriculum development support. When business is added to the equation, the student learning experience is ratcheted up to an even greater level.

The OSLN is designed to connect, share, and build upon STEM-education initiatives in Ohio, creating a borderless education network. And higher education partners stand to benefit from network involvement by communicating peer-to-peer with like-minded partners, supporting schools with both curriculum and professional development, and developing durable partnerships with schools and businesses across the state.

Below are some helpful resources for higher education partners. For additional assistance please contact us online using the Contact Form, by email to OSLN@battelle.org, or by phone at 1-800-201-2011.
